Endurance Testing: Lactate Threshold Test

Endurance Testing: Blood Lactate Threshold Test

by Kathryn Fierimonte MS, EP, CSCS, LMT

Every athlete wants to run, ride, and perform faster. While natural ability is a set factor, an individual’s lactate threshold is a highly trainable variable in performance. Lactate, a by-product of anaerobic metabolism, is produced during any intensity of activity. The key is maintaining the balance of lactate production and re-absorption. During light to moderate intensity exercise, the body is able to re-absorb lactate produced by muscles. As exercise intensity increases, muscles produce more lactate than the body is able to re-absorb. This phenomenon is called the lactate threshold (LT). Once this point is reached, muscle contraction becomes inefficient, power production is lost, and speed and performance decline.

LT tests are performed on a treadmill or computrainer*. The test begins at light-moderate exercise and intensity is increased every 3 minutes. Heart rate is recorded and a blood sample is taken by finger stick at the end of each interval. This process continues until a spike in blood lactate occurs. This completes the test and training zones are determined based on the results.

Athletes use lactate threshold testing to guide their training plans and determine the pace they can maintain during endurance sports. Using LT testing as you prepare to enter a new season shows your starting capacity and provides the intensity levels needed to improve your performance. Periodic threshold testing (every 4-6 weeks) is the best indicator of potential race performance for endurance events. Multiple tests allow you to make necessary changes, ensuring that you are training effectively to reach your goals. During the winter months, as you look forward to your upcoming race season, schedule your initial LT test and train efficiently.

*When scheduling, please note if you are interested in a Run LT Test or Cycle LT Test.

Please contact Kathryn Fierimonte at kfierimonte@marathonphysicaltherapy.com or call the Norton clinic, 508-285-5533, Norwood, 781-352-5400 or Newton clinic, 617-244-1990 for information on LT Testing and package deals.
