Marathon Physical Therapy: Mental Health and Mind-BodyMarathon Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine has a long-standing and well-regarded program in Women’s Health & Pelvic Floor physical therapy, and maintains a strong commitment to advancing knowledge and practice. In order to expand our commitment to women’s needs for comprehensive care and education, a new initiative was named to serve as a platform for these needs, including mental health services: The Center for Women’s Health at Marathon Physical Therapy.

Medical treatment and/or physical therapy are clearly effective methods for treating women’s health issues and pelvic floor dysfunction, but the clinicians at Marathon recognize that treating the social and emotional “half” of the patient is equally important. There are often many emotional and behavioral challenges that arise for someone with pelvic floor dysfunction – especially when dealing with an inconclusive or ever-changing diagnosis. Chronic pain, lack of support from friends and family and, the feeling of a never-ending uphill battle with pelvic floor dysfunction are a few of the areas mental health therapy addresses. Good mental health can facilitate physical healing, self-esteem, a patient’s sense of empowerment and, may add strength to continue the long journey towards improved pelvic floor and overall health and function.

The Center for Women’s Health currently offers group and individual therapy in the Newton and Norwood offices.

  • Group therapy is a preferred method of treatment for helping patients with similar issues. It provides a safe space to share one’s story with others “in the same boat”, can decrease isolation and the sense of being the “only one” dealing with certain issues, and allows for sharing of successes and setbacks, while giving and receiving support. • Individual therapy is a method of treatment that can complement participation in group therapy sessions or can be the main mental health intervention for individuals who are not comfortable or ready to participate in a group setting. Click for information on scheduling individual sessions.
